Try rescue from charity, they would have kitten to cat, puppy to dog at all age and breed.
If you insist to buy one rather than rehome one, do go to one of the breeder with good reputation. You can find one from Kennel Club for dogs. Normally a responsible breeder don’t have many litter.
Don’t buy from puppy farm, they often appear at Gumtree, etc.
Do commit to take care a life for a life, cat or dog ain’t a product we shop in department store. No return or exchange.
Finally, so research the breed alike carefully before you re-home or buy
