Located in the heart of coastal Orissa, Chilika is Asia's largest inland lake. Spread over 1100 sq.kms, it is dotted with many emerald green islands with colourful names such as Honeymoon Island, Breakfast Island, etc. The Chilika Lake is also home to a rich variety of aquatic fauna and parts of it were declared a sanctuary in 1973.In the winter months, thousands of migratory birds, ducks, cranes, golden plovers, sandpipers, ospreys, flamingoes, gulls, hawks, and many more birds of all feathers, fly in from their harsher natural climes to make Chilika their home, turning this lake into a bird watcher's paradise. Every winter, the waters come alive with their raucous calls and colourful plumage and the sounds of flight and sweet song fill the air. Cheetal (spotted deer) and black buck roam freely on the scrubby shores while dolphins dive playfully in the foam of churning waters. The lake contains a large variety of fish, which not only attract and sustain the birds but also provide livelihood to thousands of fishermen. Hundreds of boats sail out daily on the lake's blue expanse with rural fisher folk casting their nets and lines in search of a catch. The lake is encircled by hills and both sunset and sunrise are very scenic. During the day, the colour of the lake changes with passing clouds and the shifting sun. The water ripples languidly, occasionally dancing with the gentle breeze from across the Bay of Bengal.Boating facilities are available at Satpada, Barkul and Rambha. Satpada is approachable from Puri and it is a good place to view dolphins at the spot where the Chilika Lake joins the Bay of Bengal, and forms an enormous lagoon of brackish water. Both Barkul and Rambha are on the way to Gopalpur, and the Panthanivas units of Orissa Tourism located here, are reasonably comfortable and offer value for money. Article Tags: Chilika Lake
