The Botanical Garden of Peter the GreatThe first park to visit in Saint Petersburg is one of the biggest in the city. Also, it is one of the oldest Botanical gardens in the country. The full name of this green island is the Botanical Garden of the V.L. Komarov Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, or St. Petersburg's Botanical Garden in short. It was established by Peter the Great, to practice vegetation of plants from Russia and other parts of the world. That time, in 1714, it was ranked with other European botanical gardens in importance and collection size. In the beginning the medical herbs were grown only, but later exotic seeds and plants were collected and cultivated there. A very big greenhouse was built in the Botanical garden. Still the park is used for botanical research – workers take part in expeditions to find out new sorts of seeds, plants, trees, shrubs.Inside the Garden you may find not only plants and greenhouses, but walking paths, libraries, nurseries, relaxation areas – everything for you to spend time comfortably, with pleasure and standing to gain new knowledge. The landscape of the Botanical garden is quite various. It is obvious that plants from different zones and climates are grown there. Greens from Russia are outside, uncovered, while tropical and subtropical plants are located in numerous greenhouses. The scenery is also different – some Caucasus and Mediterranean plants are in the hills, Asian are at plains.Surprisingly, but a lot of Asian – Chinese and Japanese plants are in the Garden – ferns, bamboos, orchids, palms and a lot of others. Some items are really unique – just get an idea that there is a huge water-lily of 2 meters size that can support 60 kilograms on its leaves.Once a year you can have a great opportunity to visit the Garden at night – in May the great Queen of the Night flowers is exposed. .A lot of rare pieces of the collection have died outduring the Second world war, others were damaged. So, it is the oldest park in Saint Petersburg, the most fascinating and charming place of Saint Petersburg, so loved by its native citizens. The park is big - 12 hectare, with a very strict geometric plan of alleys, one side of the park faces the embankment of the Neva river – all that makes it look like very formal and imperial. It is said, that Peter the Great created a plan of the park by himself, with a help of a Dutch garderner and physician Nicolas Bidloo. Other Dutch masters took care of the park until 1726.The park is not only trees and plants, there are also a lot of monuments and sculptures, art pieces and fountains. Hundreds of marble statues are following all the park lines. Only 90 of them are extant now, but they were taken from the Garden and moved indoors to be saved, and replaced with their modern copies. Fountains of the Summer Garden, which represent scenes from Aesops’s fables, are the oldest in Russia – they were the first one to be created in the country. The fountain machine was bought by Peter the Great personally in Britain. Some magnificent buildings of great historical value are also located there – the original Summer Palace, Coffee House (a rebuilt grotto pavilion) and a Tea House, all built during Peter the Great time and preserved until now. There is one more interesting thing exposed in the park – a great porphyry vase, a gift from a Swedish king, is put on the bank of the Carp pond. There is a monument to a famous Russian writer – Ivan Andreevich Krylov, who is famous for his instructive fables. The park is very spectacular, so you can spend a whole day walking around all the alleys and observing all the garden sculptures that Peter the Great ordered from Europe long long ago.In old times all Imperial assemblies, parties or balls happened there. Sometimes musical festivals and other cultural events are held in the Summer Garden. As it is quite big, a few thousands of people can remain in the Garden at once. The fence of the Summer Garden is probably the only one in the world, in honor of which great poets wrote poems. Anna Akhmatova considered the Summer Garden to be the symbol of Saint Petersburg and devoted a poem to it:I want to the roses, to exceptional place – The garden where fence is adorably graced, There sculptures remember my young boiling blood And I ’em remember in Nevian flood. In odorous calm of the lime-planted path I hear the creak of a nautical mast. And swan calmly swims many ages within Admiring the beauty of its’ graceful twin. This garden keeps hundreds of thousands steps Belonging to enemies and to the friends. Dark shadows merge into infinity space From stony vase to the palace’s gates. My white nights are whispering from high above About poetical one’s secret love. And everything burns with the jasper and pearls But hidden the luminous mystery source. Also a world famous character of Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin – Evgeniy Onegin walked in the park in his childhood. But not only positive moments are there in the history of the Summer Garden.
