Torres del Paine is among the biggest of Chile’s national parks, occupying almost 600,000 acres (242,000 ha) of land in the south on the border with Argentina. It is also among the most important, receiving a significant proportion of domes Like any American, traveling occasionally is just what I love doing and I bet you share the same stuff with me. But traveling does not mean that you would be safe. Escaping from our job and other stressful activities is just something that w

Getting lost in the woods can be noxious; I had this experience just once, and I don't really want to have it again. I was out in the forest, lost in my own thoughts, appreciating the beauty of nature when I didn't take notice of time. Usually, I wear a watch at all times, but it happened to malfunction at a wrong time and place, and my iPhone's battery was insufficient as usual. Suddenly, I realized that my surroundings do not seem familiar to me; I could not find out the direction that I had taken to enter the region. It was just an hour left for sunset, and I could not find any way to leave the woods in time. My phone had ditched me, and at that time I regretted not listening to the wise advice of my uncle who had told me to carry a compass and a map. Well, since I am writing this post after that incident, it is evident that I survived without any urban equipment and found my way back to the city. The STOP approach  STOP refers to:Stay composed: I had read it somewhere that I should not panic in case I am in any kind of emergency, so the first thing I did was to compose myself and stand still at my place.Think: I tried to recall my way of coming in, whether I took a lot of turns or I took a straight line path. I also sought to think of landmarks that I came across.Observe: I tried to observe any footprints, distance from the city, and the food and water I was carrying. This information helped me establish if I could last for a day or more in the jungle or not.Plan: I finally had to take a step forward and walk in any direction. However, I was cautious to mark my trail with stones, wooden sticks, and Cairns. At least, I could return to the same spot in case I could not find my way out.Pin down the location I found out an elevated point and tried to assess where I was standing. When I trekked up a few rocks, I also saw a few houses, which meant I was not far from civilization. Standing on a higher point also gave me an opportunity to pin down my location. I made a flag out of a few branches and twigs and raised it on the ground. However, I also had it in mind that I did not make too much of effort to trek too high because I wanted to conserve energy to move further.Listen to the sounds After I had decided to walk, I observed as many marks of human pursuits as I could: the cut-down trees, wrappers of leftover food, cigarette butts, empty water bottles, the litter of pets, etc. I also tried to smell things that could lead me to anyone camping around; at least they could provide me with emergency shelter. The sounds of temple bells helped me to understand the route and direction I should take.Moving around in the open terrains As I moved forward, I was lucky to find a quite huge open terrain, which was a sign of logging or farming. It implied that there was a village or an inhabitation nearby; being in that open region also makes sure that someone looking for me may find it easier to spot me. I had found a broken piece of mirror in the forest, although it was small, I had kept it with me anyway if I would need it in case. Nevertheless, I did not find the need to use it anyway.I had seen it in a National Geographic documentary that a person who was lost like me had made an arrow on the ground with a twig to signify his direction he was heading. Luckily, the pilot got his signal and conveyed his location on the radio. And, although I was not lost on the hills, I still preferred to settle close to a water body. Moreover, traveling in the direction of water gives better chances of reaching a population. While walking in the woods, I could recall my car rental and my friends who would be worried about me. I just hoped that they would take the Self-Drive Car Rental Kolkata back to the city and find help for me.Just when I was planning to make a shelter for myself for the night as I could not reach anyone in time, I noticed someone calling for me in the woods. My eyes almost welled up with tears as I realized that my friends had finally found me. I heard my name in the pitch dark jungle and a few battery lights fluttering here and there. At least four people were looking for me; one voice of whom I could easily recognize. She was my sister, Anshika, and I was more than delighted at that time to hear her. I called back for Anshika and hugged her tight as soon as the group reached me. Thankfully, they had noticed the trial marks I had left behind and followed them. I finally rejoined my family two days later in Kolkata. Although we must have told them everything, Anshika and I decided to skip the details for a while and narrated only the delightful part of the story to them until they were better prepared to handle the misadventure.
