In the year 1905, the Director-General of Archaeology in India, John Marshall, began the building of the Sarnath Museum on the outskirts of Varanasi city to conserve the artefacts discovered during excavation jobs that happened in the northern part of the country. Now, it houses sculptures and more than 6832 artefacts, including some which even dates back to the Buddhist era.The museum is situated only 10 kilometres away from the Varanasi City. Mr James Ransome, who was a consulting architect working under the central government, planned all the architectural procedures. And, it was finally in 1910, that the building of the Sarnath Museum was completed. The layout of the museum consists of two large verandahs and five sections displaying the unmeasurable antique artefacts and other sculptures. Technically, you’ll find all sort of items in here, which were excavated from Sarnath dating from the third century BC to 12th century AD.The museum houses rich collections of sculptures, edifices and artefacts which have pictures of Lord Buddha on them. There are numerous Bodhisattva and the other historical relics as well to take a look at. The highlight of the museum is the Lion Capital of Ashoka, although there are many wonderful displays including the exquisite sculpture of Buddha from the 5th century. In this sculpture, Gautam Buddha is shown sitting cross-legged, eyes downcast in deep meditation and an aura around the head.
