Chikmagalur, popularly noted as the city/town of younger daughter, is one of the most celebrated towns in Karnataka. The reason why the town is referred so is because of the fact that it was given as a dowry to the younger daughter of Rukmangada, who was then the Sakrepatna chief; in simple terms he was the administrator of the region. Nonetheless, Chikmagalur or locally Chikmagaluru, is no more the dowry and is in fact a major part of the state of Karnataka. It is the headquarter of the district that shares the same name as the town. Plus, the town is also a major producer of coffee. It is believed that the first coffee plantation in India was done in Chikmagalur, at a place called Baba Budan Giri Hills. There is an article titled Origin of Coffee, which states that when Baba Budan, a great saint of the medieval era, was on the pilgrimage to Mecca, he travelled via the sea port of Mocha, where he tasted the coffee for the first time. To introduce his new-found taste to rest of India, he brought some coffee beans along, and then planted the beans on the hills of Chikmagalur. Today, the hills of the region are capped by large coffee states making the town one of the major producers of coffee. It is for this fact that the town is entitled with the epithet, the Coffee Land of Karnataka. Whether, it is cold or hot weather (though it never gets too hot here), sipping hot coffee is one popular activity amongst the tourists and visitors. Apart from coffee, the town is also popular for its natural juices and spices.The British ruled the region till India got its independence. Before the independence, the town served as the summer resort for the British. Chikmagalur, because of its high altitude and dense forest covered lands, receives lovely whether throughout the year.
