1. Hotel de Glace (Ice Hotel), Canada This hotel is more than just a holiday destination, it's a beautiful annual event in itself. Crafted from snow and ice each winter, this amazing hotel even has furniture carved from blocks of ice. 5 weeks out of every winter are taken for the artists and architects to sculpt the building from tons and tons of ice and snow. Each year also has a theme, with 2012's being 'Northern Quebec', in which the art and architectural features are designed and shaped to reflect the artistic vision of that season. Particularly magical is the outdoor Nordic relaxation area with its bubbling spas and saunas, available for guests from 9pm to 9am.As well as offering places to stay overnight, the hotel holds a number of themed packages which include the 'Adventure' weekend and the 'Romantic Getaway', where you'll receive a wintry weekend experience as well as a totally unique hotel room. The package costs are pretty steep, but this is a completely unmissable experience!2. Jumbo Stay, Sweden For something truly one-of-a-kind, why not try Jumbo Stay? A jumbo jet converted into a stationary hotel, this offers 27 rooms perfect for aviation enthusiasts or families with children. The vintage aeroplane was fully restored and opened as a budget friendly hotel by owner Oscar Diös in 2008, serving the local area as a striking landmark as well as a tourist destination! In addition to being a unique destination, the choice of rooms in Jumbo Stay is practical and fun; you can sleep in the affordable shared dormitory (a real plane-like experience!), or for a bit of luxury, choose the cock pit suite with amazing panoramic views. Beautifully decorated without losing its aeroplane feel, this is a fabulous, unique choice for all budgets.3. Palacio de Sal, Bolivia Truly encapsulating both unusual and unique, this beautiful Bolivian hotel is made entirely of salt! The first salt hotel idea came from local man Juan Quesada Valda who wanted to encourage his visitors to feel closer to nature and the surrounding landscape. As well as being totally one-of-a-kind, this destination is also full of most modern luxuries, with sculptures, spa facilities (closed during 2012 for remodelling) and beautiful views of the mountain ranges. There is even a 9 hole golf course also made with salt! A gorgeous hotel with a completely unusual twist.4. ArkaBarka, Serbia Situated on the Danube river in Serbia's capital, Belgrade, this hostel is half hotel, half boat. Known as the Floating Hostel, this is a cosmopolitan destination that aims to connect travellers through culture and entertainment as well as offering a unique place to stay. Reasonably priced and very cool, the glass front and balconies offer beautiful views of the river and the city as it floats on the water's surface. Ideally situated to explore Belgrade, this is a quirky option particularly well-suited to backpackers. 5. Crane Hotel, Netherlands Last but not least, this is truly a unique hotel. This B&B is an actual, working, converted crane situated on the docks of Harlingen. It only has one (very luxurious!) room, but with fantastic decor and great service from the owners Willem and Carla, this is a very quirky holiday option.
