When booking your COSTA BLANCA HOLIDAYS most people know about the Christians and Moors if for no other reason than the festival named after them but little is known or said about the Jews in Spain. Believe it or not there are Jewish monuments, places serving Jewish food and a synagogue or two. Why not take some time and learn a little more about this religion whether it be what kind of food they eat, where they gather to pray or learning about your Jewish history of lack thereof? The Jews were expunged from Spain after the Spanish Inquisition but they are returning even now. You wouldn't know it but there are some fifty thousand Jews living in Spain today according to their central body: the Federacion de Comunidades Judias or FDCJ for short. Madrid and Barcelona have the highest population of Jews but not far behind is the city of Malaga. To a lesser degree the cities of Alicante, Benidorm, Granada, Marbella and a few more have a Jewish population. If you have children and would like them to attend a Jewish school the only choice you have is Barcelona, Madrid and Malaga. If you read about the Jewish history in Spain you will find that before the Spanish Inquisition that started in 1478, the Jews were one of the largest and of course the most prosperous communities in Spain that fell under the Muslim and Christian rule. They were allowed to live and work in peace until the two powers formed an alliance which was achieved by Isabella de Castilla marrying Fernando de Aragon. At this time the two kingdoms were brought under one roof which included not only the military but the religion as well. The Christian King and Queen would ultimately seek religious purity which did not include the Jewish religion, which resulted in them being ousted from Spain. When the Spanish Inquisition was created and began their trials; by the end 1492 over one hundred thousand Jews were forced to leave their homes. The inquisition was established to insure the maintainability of the Catholic Church in their kingdom. What most people dont know about the inquisition is it lasted until 1834 when it was finally abolished by Isabel II.Much like the Muslims that were to remain in Catholic Spain the Jews were baptized thus appearing to be converted which resulted in them being called New Christians or Conversos. Even though they were baptized this didnt stop them from practicing their religion. The only consequence if they were caught was they were burned alive at the stake which they were in the thousands. It was at this time the Jews moved to Western Europe and Latin America to have more freedom in practicing their religion. When youre enjoying your COSTA BLANCA HOLIDAYS stop and think about the Jews that come here even today to escape persecution from such places as Ashkenazim that was controlled by a military Junta. There are other places they come from where they are persecuted if for nothing more than a harmful word. Like all people, all they want to do is live a peaceful life.
