As you come in, the main street is an East-Westward path. Avenida Juarez actually is the connecting road from the 307 to the downtown square area, El Zocalo. This is located fairly close to the beach and crosses many different numbered North to South avenues. Each one of these will travel parallel to the beach and are all numbered in multiples of five.The road closest to the beach is the Avenida Quinta, or 5th Avenue and it is usually closed to traffic from the square all the way to Calle 6. Other areas of this may be closed as well later in the evening. Going any further south and you'll find Playacar, which is actually just a sort of mash up of private residences and resort hotels Playa del Carmen visitors occasionally choose to stay in. It's a golf course development, and that is the reason most head down that way.It is important to remember that everything you want is almost entirely north or west of El Zocalo. Every east to west street goes parallel to Avenida Juarez and each is numbered Calle.Even numbers run up north of the Juarez and the odd numbers will go south. The only other real main street you will find is the east to west Avenida Constituyentes and if you're following the Calles, it would be numbered 18. From many hotels Playa del Carmen can be navigated simply and easily if you remember that.Playa almost caters to pedestrians. You can walk to nearly everything you want and Avenida Quinta doesn't allow cars. You may see some, but that would be deliveries and they are only allowed during the early morning hours. You will find that most of the restaurants, cafes, shopping centers, and hotels Playa del Carmen has to offer are found here.The larger shopping venues are found on the north to southbound Avenida 30 and that's roughly five blocks of the square and 5th Avenue itself. Walking anywhere within the square is only about a ten minute walk anywhere you wish to see.Bike rental shops dot the main avenues and car rentals are also available. Most of the larger companies people know of, for instance Hertz and National have rental storefronts available but local companies do tend to be less costly. It is usually easy to find either.Travel by taxi or bus is also extremely inexpensive, and can be a way to get around if you're not keen on walking or biking.
