Dunkeld lies on the River Tay, opposite Birnam and on the main road into the Scottish Highlands. The name Dunkeld is derived from the Scottish Gaelic words Dun Chailleann, which means, Fort of the Caledonians. The Caledonii were the major tribe of the ancient Pictish people who inhabited the land north of the Roman Empire at Hadrians Wall. There is also a wood, made famous by its role in Macbeth, the play by Shakespeare, who in fact gave it a name for the first time.Other highlights of the area include Birnam Hill, at four hundred and four metres tall, and the rough and rugged Newtyle, at three hundred and seventeen metres, the highest point in the Loch of the Lowes Nature Reserve. The Loch and reserve are watched over by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, and attract deer, otters, squirrels and an impressive range of bird life, including a breeding osprey couple, who can be watched via webcam.Its lovely setting makes Dunkeld ideal for short breaks Scotland.
