The Neuquen Province in west Argentina is sandwiched between the popular destinations of Mendoza to the north and Bariloche to the south. Although many travelers will undoubtedly head to these first two, Neuquen contains many attractions that may make it a worthwhile addition when planning trips to Argentina. Characterized by abundant forests, lakes, and rivers, this region is great for travelers with an interest in exploring nature in northern Patagonia. Neuquen hosts two popular resort towns. San Martin de los Andes is located on the shores of Lacar Lake and just 27 miles (45 km) from the border with Chile. This town is a great destination at any time of year. In summer, the town hosts the South American Bird Fair, the largest meeting of birders on the continent. Aside from that, San Martin is oriented toward the practice of outdoor sports such as kayaking, rafting, trekking, and mountain biking. The nearby Chapelco Golf Club also hosts an excellent course designed by Jack Nicklaus and his son. In winter, Chapelco and Cerro Bayo are locations of top ski resort. Villa La Angostura, is another resort town, located on the road from San Martin de los Andes to Bariloche. Like the first town, this one was designed in wood, in the style of an Alpine village and offers amenities to suit, including artisanal products such as beer and chocolate. This town is a great base to explore the surrounding rivers, lakes, and waterfalls. The town lies within the boundaries of Nahuel Huapi National Park, and it also borders Los Arrayanes National Park, which protects the rare arrayan tree and is abundant with birds and Andean wildlife. As mentioned, Neuquen is filled with natural attractions, including mountains and extensive trails that will appeal to travelers interested in hiking. Copahue Volcano lies right on the border between Chile and Argentina. It is an active volcano, evident from the continuously steaming fumarole. Thermal activity also heats the natural hot springs around Lake Caviahue. At the crater there is a lake, and although it disappeared after an eruption in 2000, it has since returned to normal levels. Nahuel Huapi National Park is a spectacularly scenic stop to break up travel between Mendoza and Bariloche. From Lanin National Park in the north, the 7 Lakes Road passes from San Martin de los Andes, through Villa La Angostura, and to Bariloche. The park itself has many trails for trekking and in the summer the lake is also a destination for sport fishing and water sports.
