Travel and Leisure magazine recently released the results of their surveys about the best hotels, cities, and islands to visit around the world. Latin America made a respectable showing in all categories. Here we highlight the results. Coming in at number 6 in hotels, the Nayara Hotel, Spa & Gardens is notable because its the first time in the surveys history that a Costa Rica hotel has broken into the top 10. This Costa Rica resort has also won awards from Conde Nast, TripAdvisor, and others. Located in La Fortuna, this 5-star boutique hotel provides a tranquil and luxurius setting for visiting the Arenal Volcano, lounging in hot springs, and for relaxation after exploring the surrounding rainforest. In hotels, Chile and Argentina also made it into the Top 100. The top Buenos Aires hotel Palacio Duhau, located in the exclusive neighborhood of Recoleta, climbed from 19 to 8 in the rankings. The fine Llao Lalo Hotel & Resort, a historic Bariloche hotel, came in at 95. In Chile, Hotel Salto Chico in Torres del Paine National Park made its first appearance in this category, joined by Grand Hyatt in Santiago. Within the Latin America category, Buenos Aires hotels made a strong showing with 6 other selections: Intercontinental, Alvear Palace, Four Seasons, Faena Hotel, Park Tower, and Hilton; all of these are around Recoleta or the trendy neighborhood of Puerto Madero. Other South American hotels that made the top 15 are: Hotel Monasterio in Cusco; Park Hyatt in Mendoza; JW Marriot Hotel in the Lima neighborhood of Miraflores; and Ritz-Carlton and W Santiago, both in Chiles capital. In the category of Islands, Galapagos made an excellent showing at number 3, rising from its number 10 ranking in 2011. The Galapagos Islands was beat out only by Boracay in the Philippines and the beautiful Bali. (Notably, and not related to South America, Vancouver Island debuted in the Top 10 in the islands category.)No Latin American cities made it into Travel and Leisures Worlds Top 10 Cities, but the results for Mexico, Central, and South America are quite interesting. Cusco switched out with Buenos Aires for the position of number 1. Although Machu Picchu might be the draw, the imperial Inca city is a fine addition for any South America plan and is worth spending a few days in. Rio de Janeiro and Santiago retained their high rankings, while Lima came in at number 8.
