You have arranged your ANDALUCIA VILLAS again this year but this time they are in the little village of Frigiliana. Just imagine a little white village perched on a hill top some 435 metres above sea level to the east of Malaga. This picturesque setting lies between the Mediterranean Sea and the Montes de Malaga, only 56 kilometres from the airport. One of the biggest draws to the area is the Chillar River which passes through the village, giving the local flora and fauna an excellent supply of water.Due to its placement in the rocky mountains, it was able to defend its self with a small band of shoulders against a far superior force who would have a big problem in accessing it. However there is a story about one such battle when the village was surrounded by Catholic troops along with an additional twelve infantry units. During this battle over half of the village was wiped out.The ones who fought against the Christians and lost were the Moriscos. For the Moriscos this was a fight to the end with many of the village women fighting side by side with the men. Its interesting to note the women preferred death before dishonour, with a lot of them jumping from the surrounding cliffs with their children. Having said all this, some of them did escape but for the most part they were badly injured and needed medical attention which they did not receive, dying on their way to safety. This area abounds in vines, olive trees and subtropical fruit due to the fertile land surrounding it. This has influenced the economic factors in this small village, to the point that agriculture is now the controller factor of the local economy. When you are away from your ANDALUCIA VILLAS and out shopping, take note of what comes out of the ground as it only goes to make the local cuisine just that little bit better. There are many traditional recipes such as goat in an almond or garlic sauce served with fennel, cabbage and whatever else is in season. In addition they make black pudding and chorizo, including other popular dishes with local honey made from sugar cane used in sweets. Dont pass up an opportunity to sample the local wine either as it is a treat on its own.
