Passenger Name Record (PNR), the most familiar and the most frequently used term in the travel industry both by the travel professionals and the passenger itself. In the travel industry, a passenger name record (PNR) is a record in the database of a computer reservation system (CRS) that contains the itinerary for a passenger, or a group of passengers traveling together. The concept of a PNR was first introduced by the airlines that needed to exchange reservation information in case passengers required flights of multiple airlines to reach their destination. There is no general industry standard for the layout and content of a PNR. In practice, each CRS or hosting system has its own proprietary standards to create a PNR. When a passenger books an itinerary, the travel agent or travel website user will create a PNR in the computer reservation system it uses. This is typically one of the large Global Distribution systems, such as Amadeus, Sabre, Worldspan or Galileo, but if the booking is made directly with an airline the PNR can also be in the database of the airlines CRS. The PNR status enquiry more commonly identified or called as the record locator in the laymans language. With the introduction of many online travel companies the requirement of the PNR has gone up. PNR is the backbone of the tourism industry and also one point check for the traveler. With this one PNR the airlines and the travel companies can access the complete record of the traveler of what they have booked and when. Also the traveler has the access to all the bookings they have made for themselves and can access and manage their bookings sitting wherever they are.
