Torres del Paine is among the biggest of Chiles national parks, occupying almost 600,000 acres (242,000 ha) of land in the south on the border with Argentina. It is also among the most important, receiving a significant proportion of domes Like any American, traveling occasionally is just what I love doing and I bet you share the same stuff with me. But traveling does not mean that you would be safe. Escaping from our job and other stressful activities is just something that w
The Pantanal wetlands comprise around 54,000 square miles (140,000 square kilometers) a conservative estimate in the southwest Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sol, extending into part of Bolivia and Paraguay. The Pantanal has 2 distinct seasons, rainy and dry.During the rainy season, 80% of the floodplains are submerged under water that rise to between 2 and 5 meters. Water flows into the large basin from the Paraguay River and the highland areas. Elevations range between 262 feet (80 meters) and 492 feet (150 meters) above sea level. Because the gradient is so small (0.8 inches or 2 cm per kilometer), rain water easily overflows the banks of the rivers, causing flood waves The Pantanal fluctuates between floods and drought during the dry season and these variations in water levels result in diverse flora and fauna. Vegetation types include the 3 main ecosystems of South America, namely tropical Amazon rainforest, Chaco dry forests, and Cerrado savanna. Grasslands and seasonally flooded woodlands are characteristic of the areas that experience greater increases in water levels.Motivated primarily by the immense biodiversity, Pantanal is becoming a top Brazil travel destination for ecotourism. Astounding number of species inhabit this environment, including 480 reptile species, 300 mammal species, and 1,000 bird species, including 26 parrot species. Indeed, the Pantanal is one of the largest breeding grounds for wetland bird species such as ibis, heron, and stork. Among the rare species found here are the march deer, the giant river otter, the maned wolf, the giant anteater, and the yacare caiman. The Pantanal is also a huge refuge for jaguars, which can be found here in large numbers.Cattle-raising is the principal industry in the Pantanal, and an estimated 2,500 fazendas (ranches) and 8 million cattle are found in the region. This activity results in erosion and sedimentation of the floodplain ecosystem. Further threats are illegal hunting of endangered species including reptiles and parrot species. In an effort to stave off these threats, a large area of land comprising 520 square miles (1,350 square kilometers) have been placed under protection as the Pantanal Matogrossense National Park. However, most of the land that comprises the wetlands is under private ownership. Another private reserve, the SESC Pantanal Private Natural Heritage Reserve constitutes 340 square miles (879 square kilometers). Increasingly and with great awareness of the threat that human activity poses to this ecosystem, new lodges and tour operators are cropping up that place great emphasis on conserving and preserving this wholly unique environment. The best time to travel depends on your interest in specific wildlife. Summer temperatures can be quite hot, varying between 77F (25C) and 104F (40). Winter can bring cold spells when temperatures drop to near 30F (0C).
