When needing a break from the bustle of Liverpool, head to Calderstones Park. Located close to your cheap hotel Liverpool centre, the 94 acre park is a perfect day out for the family and features a botanical garden, playground and world-famous Allerton Oak.The park was originally part of the Manor of Allerton but then had to be sold in 1726 by the family who were facing a debt crisis. Merchant Thomas Martin brought the land and then further sold it on to Joseph Walker in 1825. At this time, there was an old farm-house in the area but this was then destroyed so that the new mansion Calderstones House, where the park gets its name from, could be built. Both originally get their name from the megaliths which are within the park, and they are rumoured to be even older than Stonehenge! The land then was sold again to Charles MacIver in 1875 for about £52,000 but the family eventually sold the area to Liverpool City in 1902 for only £43,00, making a loss. The area is now a park which features a botanical garden, founded in 1802, containing over 4000 plant species which are from all over the globe. There is also a lake with ducks and playground for children, a café and of course the famous mansion house. However, of course, the main draw here is the Allerton Oak, or the Law Oak, which is over 1000 years old. It is said that the Courts would often sit under this tree and pass laws. The trunk is hollowed out now whilst the branches are still standing by support of stakes. Either way, it is a very impressive sight. When you have done all the major attractions in the city and are looking for a day to keep the children occupied whilst relaxing yourself, Calderstones Park is your best bet. Book into one of the many Liverpool airport hotels available at your disposal and experience this truly cosmopolitan city for yourself. Both urban and rural, Liverpool will have something to appease the masses.
