Riobamba is the tenth-largest city in Ecuador, located in the shadow of the Chimborazo Volcano and surrounded by hills and snow-capped mountains. It is located 200 miles (120 km) south of Quito along the Avenue of the Volcanoes and it is an important transport center along the Pan-American Highway. Riobamba is a top Ecuador travel destination, mainly as the departure point for the infamous Nariz del Diablo (Devils Nose) train ride.The region was first inhabited by the Puruha nation, who put up a fierce resistance to Inca attempts to conquer the territory in the 15th century. Their eventual domination by the Inca Huayna Capac was more like a negotiation. The Inca married a Puruha princess to seal the alliance, and their descendent, Atahualpa, was the unfortunate last emperor under the Spanish conquest. Riobamba was one of the first cities established after the conquest in 1534. A major earthquake in 1797 flattened the city, which was rebuilt in a location 8.7 miles (14 kilometers) away.In December, the city hosts the Fiesta del Nino Rey de Reyes, extending until January 6 and drawing thousands of spectators for parades and celebrations. Because of the equatorial bulge, Chimborazos summit is the farthest point on the earth from the center. This volcano can be climbed year round. Tours are usually 9 or 10 hours in duration, and depart just after midnight in order to climb and descend before sunset.Sangay Volcano in the national park of the same name is the highest active stratovolcano in Ecuador and the most active. Although climbing this volcano is dangerous because of an ongoing eruption, Sangay National Park hosts significant biodiversity, for which it has been declared a World Heritage Site. Wildlife includes mountain tapirs, giant otters, king vultures, and other bird species.By bus, travel to Riobamba is 3 hours from Quito, 4 hours from Guayaquil, and 1.5 hours from Banos.
