Puerto Maldonado is located on the banks of the Tambopata River, near its confluence with the Madre de Dios River. By bus, it is a 10 to 12 hour ride, whereas by plane, the trip is just 30 minutes in duration. Here is some basic information about Puerto Maldonado.The town has a population of 210,000 inhabitants. Average temperatures around the year are 79F (26C) with humid and sunny days. The airport and bus terminal are located on the outskirts of town in the westernmost section of town. If you book in advance with a lodge or hotel, a representative will usually meet you and escort you to your next destination. Hotels and lodges are dotted throughout town. Puerto Maldonado itself has limited attractions as a town. Most travelers only pass through Puerto Maldonado briefly on their way to jungle lodges further up or down river. However, you are just a likely to find other travelers staying in a hotel or lodge in town; these accommodations range from basic to upscale, but most are fully equipped.The main square, the Plaza de Armas, is very small, but surrounded by restaurants and bars, banks and cash machines, and hotels. The Obelisk is on Avenida Fitzcarrald leading away from the bus terminal and on a hot, sunny day provides a shady spot to catch a breeze as motorbikes rush past. You can climb to the top to get a view of the confluence of the Tambopata and Madre de Dios rivers. The central market is just down the street and here you can find anything from home products to sandals to fruits and vegetables.Tours & Excursions Whether you are staying in town or in a lodge, it is possible to arrange various sorts of excursions into the surrounding forest. There are a few popular one-day excursions.Lake Sandoval is located within the Tambopata National Reserve. Sandoval is an oxbow lake home to rare species of river otter, hoatzins, anacondas, turtles, howler monkeys, macaws, and countless other fauna. Visits can be arranged in the morning or the afternoon.Several lodges organize adventure tours into the rain forest. This includes a boat ride to the lodge and facilities. Adventure activities include zip-lining, canopy walk, and kayaking on the river, as well as lunch.Another option is a visit to Monkey Island.
