Arequipa is Perus second largest city. It is arguably the most cosmopolitan after Lima, but it also has an ever present history and a palpably unique regional sentiment. The cultural attractiveness of Arequipa is complemented by its surrounding landscape, one of the most scenic in Peru. The city, surrounded by volcanic mountains and lush valleys, enjoys a year-round temperate climate which has earned it the designation of city of eternal spring. In addition, two of the most impressive canyons in the world, the Cotahuasi and the Colca, are accessed via Arequipa. The historic center of Arequipa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is gorgeously reminiscent of the city and the countrys Spanish colonial past. The central Plaza de Armas is shaded with trees, lined with flower-filled paths, and dotted with benches on which to sit and admire the tranquil activity of the local residents. Arched passageways provide shade for travelers and open up into shops and restaurants. Meanwhile, the main Cathedral serves as a photogenic backdrop. Nearby is the Santa Catalina Monastery, a mini-city complete with streets, alleys, and a chapel, the quiet elegance of which reminds one of the historical importance of this social institution.Arequipa is also the gateway to the Colca Canyon, 100 miles (160 km) from the city. A typical tour involves the following: First, an approximately 2 hour drive early in the morning from Arequipa to the town of Chivay, the provincial capital of Caylloma. Along the way, you can enjoy views of Arequipas 3 volcanos: Misti, Chachani, and Pichupichu. The drive also includes a stop at the Pampa Canahuas National Reserve. Among the notable fauna here is the vicuña, a relative of the llama, valued for its wool, which has been a key source of Arequipas wealth since the colonial period. At the far end of the reservation is the Andean community of Pata Wasi, which translates to High Home in recognition of its high elevation at 3,400 meters above sea level. From this location, travelers can also appreciate a different perspective of the Misti and Chachani volcanoes. As the trip continues, elevations go up and the views great progressively more amazing. Tours include a stop in Chivay, a small town that retains many of its traditions. From the town of Coporaque, travelers can appreciate views of the canyons agricultural terraces. The Calera hot springs are a short distance away. The highlight of the tour is a stop at the Mirador de la Cruz del Condor, a lookout point ideal for spotting soaring condors and for appreciating the monumental depth of the canyon.
