Quito, the capital of Ecuador, is a wonderfully historic city that also boasts a spectacular volcano studded landscape. The city has over 50 churches and convents and 17 squares. Travelers needs at least four days for a full tour of Quitos historic center and surrounding attractions. Of course, a visit to Quito can be extended to see Guayaquil (Ecuadors most populous city) and the Galapagos Islands, or to venture into neighboring Peru, Bolivia, or Brazil.Day 1 Arrive to Quito and spend the day easing into the high altitude conditions. Quito is located at 9,200 feet (2,800 meters) above sea level and most people will only experience a bit of tiredness as one of the effects of altitude. However, it is still a good idea to take it easy on the first day. Visit one of Quitos many parks and enjoy a stroll along one of the tree-lined paths. The northern quarter of Quito, especially the neighborhood of La Mariscal, also has many museums as well as excellent restaurants and cafes. Any of these activities is great for people-watching. You can also ride the TeleferiQo to the nearby Pichincha volcano.Day 2 Take a walking tour or other guided tour to the Quito historic center, one of UNESCO first World Heritage Sites (1978). The area is filled with colonial era buildings from the 16th through the 19th centuries. Alameda Park gives you a great view of one of the main square and the Basilica del Voto Nacional. Stroll along Garcia Moreno, the Street of the Seven Crosses, named after the crosses placed by Spanish soldiers during the conques. See also the Plaza Grande (Plaza Independencia), surrounded by Quitos most monumental edifices, including the Presidential Palace, the Cathedral, and La Compania de Jesus church. Another must see square is Plaza San Francisco, which has the San Francisco Church and Monastery, which dates to the 1570s. The historic center has sufficient attractions to fill 2 or 3 days if you wanted.Later that same day, take a car to the equatorial line at the Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World) monument and museum, located 45 minutes from Quito. Many activities take place is the surrounding area, including markets with handcrafts and art for sale and performances by folkloric groups.Day 3 Head to Otavalo, a town with 50,000 inhabitants located about 2 hours north of Quito. Along the way, stop at Calderon and Guayllabamba to sample the regional food specialties. The artisanal market, known as Plaza de Ponchos, is one of the most famous in South America, and among the items for sale are weavings, jewelry, clothes, carvings, and a plethora of souvenirs. If you have time and interest, visit Cotocaxi mountain, just 18km from town.Day 4 Start your return trip home or decide to extend your time in Quito or Ecuador.
