Trichy which is also named Tiruchirappalli is one of the very important metropolitan areas of Tamil Nadu state in India. It is situated within the banks of the Cauvery River. It is one among the places of historic significance because it was reigned over by different kingdoms during various instances which consist of the Pandyas, Cholas, Pallavas, Madurai and Delhi Sultanates, Vijayanagar Kingdom, Nayaks of Madurai and British. Cholas had Uraiyur as their capital city which is one of the suburbs of Trichy. It is said that the Sanskrit name Trishirapuram became Tiruchirapalli which means three headed town. The well-liked opinion of Hindus is the fact that the devil with three heads called Trishira meditated at this specific location towards Lord Shiva to obtain his favor. This town was referred as Tirussilapalli which means holy rock city in one of the inscriptions of the sixteenth century. Chiruttapalli means little town and the name might have originated from that. It stayed in their possession till the year 1736 right up until it had been taken over by Chanda Sahib. In the year 1741 Marathas seized the spot and then the Maratha general Murari Rao took care of its administration for a couple of years. In 1743, it was included with the Carnatic Kingdom. When Chanda Sahib ousted the Nawab of Carnatic, Muhammed Ali Khan Wallajah in the year 1751 he set up his root at Tiruchirappalli. This approach triggered the Second Carnatic War. British East India Company took sides with Muhammed Ali Khan Wallajah while the French East India Company took the side of Chanda Sahib. The English army was successful and Wallajah turned the ruler once again. In the year 1753 Nanjaraja invaded Trichy and in 1780, Hyder Ali of Mysore Empire invaded the spot. Once again Tipu Sultan made his attack in 1793. British found out the secret partnership in between Tipu Sultan and the Carnatic Nawab, Umdat Ul Umra. Therefore, at the time they annexed the Carnatic Kingdom in July 1801, Trichy also came below their influence. The English founded the district of Trichinopoly. Trichy saw large advancements immediately after that both in pre-independence period of time and post-independence period.
