Travelers to Peru heading to Machu Picchu or other Peru destination frequently stop in Lima. The city is experiencing a period of economic growth as well as a gastronomic boom and there is plenty to see and do. The neighborhoods of Miraflores and Barranco, directly on the coast, offer a varied and diverse taste of the best that Lima has to offer, including restaurants, hotels, museums, and parks. The Miraflores District in Lima is directly on the Pacific Ocean on a stretch known as Costa Verde. Historically, it has been a neighborhood for the wealthy and some streets are lined with old colonial era houses. The Casa Museo Ricardo Palma is an archetypical example of the style of architecture that characterizes the neighborhood, in addition to housing the collection of this author, one of Perus most celebrated. Miraflores today has many of Limas top hotels, such as the Miraflores Park Hotel, and a plethora of attractions. One of the most interesting sites is the Huaca Pucllana, an adobe pyramidal structure constructed by the Lima culture between the second and the seventh centuries AD. The remains of multiple females have been found here and it believed that the high priests of the Lima culture sacrificed women in order to ensure the continued favor of the gods. Parque Kennedy is the heart of Miraflores around which visitors will find a concentration of commercial activity. Finally, the popular Calle de las Pizzas (Pizza Street) goes off from the park; as the name suggests, this pedestrian walkway is lined with Italian and other restaurants. The Larcomar shopping mall is built on the side of a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean and boasts spectacular views of the coastline. Larcomar is one of Limas premier commercial centers and visitors will find clothing stores, a food court, bars, restaurants, and a movie theatre. The mall is adjacent to some of Miraflores iconic building towers, the Parque Mar and the Marriot. Also within the mall is the Sala Museo de Oro del Peru which exhibits pre-Columbian works crafted in gold, silver, and other precious metals. Miraflores has become a center for paragliding. Practitioners of this sport can be spotted a midday and travelers in search of an adrenaline rush can go solo or embark on tandem flights.
