One of the mostentertaining Peru holidays, Carnaval is a celebration full of music, food, anddancing. Especially popularare the water fights that take to the street and to which children and adultsalike participate. The entire month, travelers and locals alike must keep aneye out for a stray water balloon. Though Celebrated throughout the month, athree day weekend is designated to truly indulge in the fun. Music and dancingcan be found in the town center, the Plaza de Armas, on Friday night. An array ofstreet vendors can be found selling typical Peruvian cuisine amongst themasses, as well as men and women selling water guns, preparing for the dayahead. Saturday marks the day of paint, where stepping outside of your hostelor hotel can mean being covered in paint, water, and flour. Boys, girls,grandmas and grandpas alike take part in the celebrations that occur throughoutthe day. Groups of people with instruments, flags, and of course water guns,walk the streets chanting Carnaval songs all day. Dont forget to look up; manyparticipate in the activities from their roof tops and balconies, tossingbuckets of water down on those who march in the streets. Feel free to keep thepaint on, and celebrate through-out the night, as the streets are filled withmusic, food, and dancing until the sun rises. The celebrationcontinues on Sunday and gathers the community in streets and the Plaza deArmas, where the parade takes place. The parade, travels through the streetsfull of locals, young and old, all are dressed head to two in costumes. Hatsfive meters high and dresses of bright colors can be seen from afar, these arejust a few of the costumes one can see while watching the parade, which goes onfor more than 3 hours. Parades are common in all Carnaval celebrations, Rio de Janeiroboasts one of the best Carnavals in the world, the Rio parade goes throughoutthe entire night until the sun again illuminates the elaborate and beautifulcostumes.
