Torres del Paine is among the biggest of Chiles national parks, occupying almost 600,000 acres (242,000 ha) of land in the south on the border with Argentina. It is also among the most important, receiving a significant proportion of domestic and foreign visitors to Chile. The park was established in 1959 and was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1978.Among the parks key attractions are its mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes, and glaciers, all in all a splendid Patagonian landscape. Cordillera del Paine is the principal mountain range, which is comprised of the Torres del Paine and Cuernos del Paine (Horns of Paine), rising to 10,000 feet (3050 meters) above sea level. It is the centerpiece of the park and is surrounded by spectacular valley, including French Valley which has cliff walls that rise dramatically from the valley floor. Ascencio Valley is the normal trekking route to get to the Torres del Paine lookout.Trekkers will enjoy clearly marked paths and basic shelters. There are various hiking options that range from full-day treks to 5 day to 8-9 day treks. Fires are prohibited and camping is allowed only at specific sites. The best time to visit is during the Patagonian summer December to February. Daylight hours are longer and the weather is more temperature, although the average remains relatively low at 60F (16C). Winter weather is cold and extremely changeable. The Southern Ice Field feeds the numerous rivers, streams, lakes, and waterfalls that characterize Torres del Paine. The ice field occupies the entire western portion of the park and is the source of four major glaciers, including Dickson, Grey, Zapata, and Tyndall. These glaciers have been receding rapidly in recent years. For travelers to Torres del Paine, Route 9 connects the park to the nearest towns of Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas, respectively 70 miles (112 km) and 194 miles (312 km) to the south. The road is mostly asphalted but also gravel. The national park is bordered on the north by Argentinas Los Glaciares National Park, with towns like El Calafate and El Chalten and attractions like the Perito Moreno Glaciar and Mount Fitz Roy. Over the years, Torres del Paine National Park has suffered devastating forest fires. In 1985, a Japanese tourist tossed a cigarette butt, causing a 35,000 acre (14,000 ha) fire, and in 2005, a Czech tourists overturned cooking stove burned across 37,000 acres (15,000 ha). In reparation, the Czech government paid for 30 million trees to re-forest the affected areas. Most recently, an Israeli tourist lit fire to toilet paper, which went out of control at the end of 2011 and into 2012, consuming at least 37,000 acres (12,000 ha).
