Like many German cities, Munich has a history that spans the centuries and is tied to the development of numerous ideas, inventions, events, and personalities. The earliest record of the city dates from 1158 when it was mentioned in a document and is considered the citys foundation date. Today, Munich is Germanys third largest city with a population of 1.35 million people, wherever you are staying or visiting in the city, form the Hilton Munich City to a friends house in the suburbs, the history of the city is all around you. Though the founding of Munich as a place is dated to 1158, the settlement as a whole is attributed to an order of Benedictine Monks who founded a monastery on Petersbergl Hill and were living there from the 8th century onwards. This hill, and this settlement, was to become the oldest church in Munich, St. Peters. Today one can still sense the rise of the land around the church and try to imagine the monks living their daily life in an untamed and isolated area of southern Germany over 1200 years ago. While the monks may have started the process of cultivating the land which ultimately caused lay people to live nearby, it was the eventual rise to power by local electors that and their participation in politicking and taxation of the time that forced the nascent Munich to become increasingly stratified and settled. By the time of the citys founding in 1158, it was already an important stop on the trade routes through to Italy and was a point of contention between two local leaders who were vying for the ownership of taxable bridges across the rivers of the city. Learning more about Munich will make any visit to the city whether a short trip staying at the Hilton Munich Park or a longer stay in an apartment.
