Thecity prospered through the span of the Mughal kings, Akbar, Jahangir and ShahJahan. In 1615, British were in a position to establish a factory at Suratimmediately after defeating the Portuguese in the Battle of Swally. In 1664,Chattrapathi Shivaji, the emperor of Marathas attacked Surat and brought ondamage to both the Mughal and Portuguese trade centers there. After the Charles II of Great britain married the Portugueseprincess Catherine of Braganza in the year 1662, Surat together with Bombay wasoffered to Great britain as a part of the dowry. In1759, all the powers involving Surat went into the hands of the British and by1800 they had total control over the spot. The tranquility of this metropolis was undisturbed forhundreds of years. The Bawamia family was the wealthiest family in the placeand they contributed tremendously for the growth of this metropolis. The fireand flood of the year 1837 caused damage to the structures. Following theindependence of India, that evolved into one of the significant industrialcentres. On 1st October 1966, municipality was transformed into MunicipalCorporation. There had been violent riots in Surat between Hindus and Muslimsin 1992. In 1994, because of heavy rains and ensuing floods plague epidemicspread taking an enormous toll. In those days, Suratphotos and Suratvideosdemonstrated the severity of the situation. Things changed rapidly and Suratnow can be described as developed metropolis having a GDP growth rate of morethan 11.5 percent.
