Lycia became part of the Roman Empire in 66. A.D. St. Paul debarked on a ship from here on his last journey to Rome and in the middle ages millions visited the tomb of St. Nicholas whilst on their pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Devastated by earthquakes and contagious diseases over hundreds of years Lycia turn into desolate and was mostly forgotten. Currently it is home to a wild hinterland covered in forest, topped by limestone peaks and olive groves and overlooking a secret shoreline. At the present time the fishermen's villages have become holiday resorts but, in amongst the villas, pensions, atmosphheric bars, comfortable restaurants and yach-filled harbours can still be seen the hidden remains of Lyicia's ancient past; in the coves and on hill tops the white stones of old cities ar obsured by plants. The roads that extend between these cities - stone roads, Roman roadsk, ancient aqueducts, shepherds paths and forest tracks, have been turned into Turkey's first long distance hiking route. The Lycian Way Trek, which has been recognised by the SUNDAY TIMES as one fo the best 10 walks in the world, which COUNTRY WALKING magazine rated 15th amongst walking routes was opened in 1999 due to the work and determinations of Kate Clow. At around 500 km long it is one of the world's top ten longest trekikng routes. It is situated on Turkey's southern coast in an area known as th Teke Peninsula between Dalaman and Antalya airports. In general terms the trek describes a route between the Aurus Mountains and the Mediteranean Sea in the lands of Ancient Lycia. In addition to being a trek that visits all the major historical places of Lycian Civilisation the Lycian way is of attention to those who want to lose themselves on a route that encompasses beutiful environs in one of the world's most striking geographical locations. One day you might be tanning yourself under the sun by the sea, one day you can find yourself on the summits of snow capped mountains. En route you can discover the remains of beautiful ancient cities, matched only by the beauty of the outlooks over the Mediterranean and you witness the most beautiful sunsets.
