One of the more curious celebrations held in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh, is the annual Beltane Fire Festival which takes place at Calton Hill, on April 30th. If you want to enjoy the festival in style and comfort, then check in for the weekend at the Hilton Hotel Edinburgh Scotland. The city boasts some excellent hotels, and there are many that will put you within easy walking distance of the Beltane festivities. The Beltane Fire Festival comes from the ancient Gaelic celebrations of Beltane; these early practices took place on the evening prior to May 1st, and were a way of marking the start of summer; the spring equinox. The modern-day celebrations began in 1988, initiated by a small group of keen musicians and scholars. The School of Scottish Studies based at Edinburgh University have played a key part in establishing the modern practice, and they have been joined in this by a number of successful musical collectives including the popular Test Dept.Drawing on a range of literary, mythological and historical sources, the idea behind the festival is to recreate (as accurately as possible), the earliest celebrations of Beltane. In recent years the festival has grown to include in excess of 300 voluntary performers, and in 2006 the festival was completely sold out a total of 11,500 tickets. The festival itself involves a range of fire ceremonies, dances, and re-enactments of traditional Gaelic magic rituals. There are strong dramatic elements to the celebrations, which usually start with a procession from the National Monument, leading into a series of elaborate fire performances and symbolic rituals. There are plenty of ways to enjoy the festival some people choose to camp nearby, while others opt for self-catering or bed and breakfast style accommodation. Many prefer to check in to a luxury hotel Edinburgh having plenty of options available. Wherever you decide to stay though, be sure to get your tickets booked early this exciting event grows in popularity every year, and tickets sell out fast!
