While you do not want worry about weight gain to spoil a time when you are supposed to be having fun and relaxing, the following are ways to help maintain your weight while vacationing:· Exercise is the most effective way of keeping weight creep at bay. Activities including walking around a golf course or city streets, playing basketball, swimming, kayaking, biking or playing tennis are all great forms of exercise. If such activities will not be available at your destination, try to select a hotel that offers a gym.· Selectively decide where and when you would like to splurge on a meal. For example, if you go somewhere to enjoy a great brunch, be more conservative in your meal choices later that day. Try not to waste calories on food you can easily eat at home. At the same time, do not deny yourself the occasional treat or indulgence. Remember your days total calories are what counts.· Be careful of the portions you eat at restaurants. Consider sharing an entrée or having a salad and appetizer for dinner. Skipping meals is not advised since people often end up too hungry then and often later over-eat.· Keep some nutritious snacks available. Fruit, veggies, low fat cheese sticks, natural yogurts, small packages of nuts, and whole grain crackers are preferred.· Be aware that alcoholic drinks add calories quickly especially since people tend to drink more when on vacation. Be particularly conscious of fruits drinks such as daiquiris, margaritas, and coladas which often contain as many as 300 to 600 calories per drink. Preferred drinks include light beer, wine spritzer, wine, champagne, or spirits mixed with seltzer or club soda.· Indulge yourself while on vacation with something other than food by treating yourself to a massage, reading a great book in a relaxing location, enjoying a long bath, watching a movie, and/or sleeping in late. The more pampered you feel the less likely you will turn to food as an indulgence.
