Sport in Scotland is integral to the culture for both locals and the diaspora of the Scottish community abroad. One of the most important culminations of Scottish sport and skill are the Highland Games. The games have to be within the Highlands however, though one can still see competitive versions of the games being played elsewhere in Scotland. If staying at central Glasgow hotel or Edinburgh hostel, chances are one can still see some of the various sports practiced. The Highland games as an organized event is directly linked to the resurgence of traditional Scottish culture after the English attempted to subjugate Scottish nationalism in the 18th century. The event is a Victorian-era invention and captures some of the allure and romanticism of the time with folk tradition. The sports that are in the competition however are much older. These events include the Caber Toss, where a long tapered pine or pole log is balanced in the hands of the competitor. The person runs forward with the log and attempts to toss it so that it flips around and the end that was being held lands as close as possible to the 12 oclock position. Another game is the stone put, which is very similar to the shot put. The hammer throw is another event also similar to its cousin in standard track and field events. The weight over the bar is where the athlete tosses a 56 pound weight over a raised bar. An additional one is the sheaf toss where a wheat sheaf is thrown. Finally, the Maide Laisg, or lazy stick is a game where to people sit with soles of their feet together with both pulling on a stick to see who is raised first.Scottish Highland dancing is also part of the competition too and is equally, if not more, athletic than the above mentioned events. From hotels in Ballater to anywhere else one might land, the highland games is a great spectator sport for all. In all any visit to Scotland would not be complete without viewing some of these fantastic sports.
