If you'd like a vacation that's a little different, you might want to look at Eleuthera. Be advised, though, that Eleuthera is not for everyone. If you're seeking to be entertained by fast-paced nightlife and attractions, then you should skip Eleuthera. However, if you want to relax while surrounded by amazing tropical scenery then it this is the place. Where is Eleuthera Eleuthera, one of over 700 Bahamian islands, is located about 60 miles east of Nassau. If you're looking at a map, it's the long, skinny island with a kind of "whale tail" at the bottom, directly East of Nassau. The island is over 100 miles long but only 2 miles wide at its widest point. The majority of the island is much narrower than that. The narrowest part of the island can be found at the Glass Window Bridge. How To Get To Eleuthera Eleuthera boasts THREE International airports. In the North is North Eleuthera (ELH). More centrally located is Governor's Harbour (GHB). In the South is Rock Sound (RSD). Using Florida as your jumping-off point gives you several options. American Eagle (operated by American Airlines) flies from Miami to North Eleuthera. Continental Airlines flies from Fort Lauderdale to North Eleuthera and Governor's Harbour. TwinAir/Calypso, which is a small private airline, offers flights from Fort Lauderdale to all three of Eleuthera's airports. BahamasAir also flies to Eleuthera, but from Florida, you'll need to make connections through Nassau. Connecting through Nassau will add a few other options. BahamasAir flies to all three airports SouthernAir flies to North Eleuthera, Governor's Harbour and Rock Sound. Alternately, you can consider taking the high-speed ferry (Bahamas Ferries) from Nassau to Spanish Wells, Harbour Island or Governor's Harbour. Of course, you'll need to check all the current schedules for these options. Places to Stay in Eleuthera You won't find any high-rise hotels or huge resorts on Eleuthera, and that is part of it's charm. You'll find the priciest resorts on Harbour Island. This is also where the rich-and-famous have some homes. You can also find a few deluxe resorts on the main island of Eleuthera - The Cove, Pineapple Fields and Cape Eleuthera Resort. But most accommodations are small, family-run, comfortable and very welcoming. There are many such hotels in Eleuthera. A few that come to mind are Surfers Manor, Rainbow Inn, Duck Inn and Unique village. For a more private, home-away-from-home experience, there are several vacation home rentals available. Research all of these options and there's no doubt that you'll find something that you'll be happy with. The Amazing Beaches of Eleuthera Eleuthera has over 50 terrific beaches along its shoreline. However, many of them are tough to find. But, there's a great little guide book available that can help you find virtually all of them. This book gives you valuable ratings for each of the beaches. That will help you decide, if your time is short, which ones to visit. Appropriately named "The Elusive Beaches of Eleuthera" it's a valuable resource that you don't want to be without. When Should You Vacation in Eleuthera While you can visit Eleuthera any time of the year, you'll find the best weather during the winter months - November to April. Summers can be a bit uncomfortable as they tend to be hot and humid. And, of course, June to November is also hurricane season. Summer also has more thunderstorms. I actually really like a good tropical thunderstorm and the ones in Eleuthera can be pretty exciting. This is just a taste of what Eleuthera has to offer.
