Some airlines are getting creative with seat design to appeal to price motivated travelers. Airlines realize that it is increasingly vital that every cabin of service and every seat is both profitable and comfortable.Safety certification changes in the early 1990s forced airlines to tweak seats across their planes. The use of new materials such as aluminum and titanium has resulted in new design possibilities. Rising fuel prices has motivated airlines to design seats that are lighter and more comfortable.Lufthansa has purchased 32,000 new seats for its fleet. The seats are thinner than those being replaced without compromising comfort and the magazine pouch has been moved from knee height to behind the tray table to add legroom. The new Boeing 787 will result in improvements to economy class comfort. The 787 offers larger windows, larger overhead bins, more headroom and quieter engines than any other commercial airplane. It also comes with improved lighting, air purification, and a higher humidity level that will counteract dryness travelers often experiences on flights.Passengers will also enjoy more control of what they see outside. Instead of lowering a solid window shade that cuts off both light and view, passengers will have a controller to lighten or darken the window. Even when the window is fully dark, passengers will be able to see outside.
