Founded by Arthur Edward Stilwell, we maintainseveral of the older original buildings, including the KCS Depot which nowhouses a museum and the Mena Chamber of Commerce. Because of our location weare considered the gateway to several of Arkansas' most well-known attractionsand features.Of those is of course the Ouachita National Forest. You can't drive 10 milesin any direction without seeing this beautiful natural resource and it is knownfor the hiking trails, nature walks and photography opportunities. Coveringmore than 1.8 million acres in central Arkansas and southeastern Oklahoma, theforest is managed for multiple uses, including timber, a wildlife habitat,wilderness management and of course outdoor recreation. The outdoor recreationis focused on camping, fishing, atv trails, lakes, rivers and we maintainseveral camping sites with access to bathrooms.Another natural resource of Mena Arkansas is the Cossatot River best knownfor its white water rapids. With the water level elevated, the river has areasthat are class IV and V and will test even the most experienced kayaker. Theriver is considered a state park-natural area and stretches for 12 miles knownas the best whitewater area in mid-America. The river eventually forms theCossatot Falls which is a rocky canyon where the river drops 33 feet inelevation within only 1/3 of a mile. Early settlers named the area the Cossatotwhich is actually french for "Skull Crusher" due to the rocky ledgesand outcrops that create the rapids. When the river is at a normal water level,it allows visitors the opportunity to swim, float and fish in the mostbeautiful and scenic river that Arkansas has to offer.One of the best known highways in Arkansas is the Talimena Scenic Drive. Itstretches over the top of the Ouachita Mountains offering 54 miles of the mostbeautiful scenic areas in Western Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma. With severalprepared photography vistas, the area is frequented all year by tourists and visitorsthat find opportunities to take photos every few miles. It allows you theopportunity to see the mountains and valleys that create the natural beauty ofArkansas and gives you access to several other attractions along the way, suchas the Queen Wilhelmina State Park. The drive itself will allow visitors theopportunity to enjoy canoeing, hang gliding, fishing and whitewater rafting atseveral different locations along its path. Of course Mena offers some of thebest lake access also.Lake Ouachita is the largest lake in Arkansas and is one of the cleanestlakes in the entire United States. Covering more than 40,000 acres thisman-made lake was first developed for flood control and hydroelectric powerproduction. Now know more for its fishing, swimming and boating, the lakeoffers 900 milesof shoreline and more than 200 islands to more than 1.2 million visitorseach year.
