Water fountains, swimming pools, and someboats at the Villette site are also accessible.Paris Beach (or "Paris Plage" in French)is a free summer event that transforms several spots in Paris into full-fledgedbeaches, each with a distinct theme. The brainchild of Paris Mayor BertrandDelanoe, well-known for launching ambitious municipal events, Paris Plage, which was initially criticized by some as costly and frivolous, has become apermanent fixture in the Parisian summertime scene. From sunning in the sand toswimming in pools suspended over the Seine, kayaking, or enjoying free eveningconcerts, Paris Break offers activities that both kids and adults will enjoy.1.Saint-Jean de LuzThis charming Aquitaine village has much tocommend it: it is a few minutes from Spain and close to the Pyrenees, it is inthe heart of the ever-interesting Basque Country, and it is filled withadorable and unique Basque architecture. This is easily one of my favoritedestinations in France. You get the shops, markets and cafes of a city, but itis still a relatively small town. Parking is hard (almost impossible) to comeby, though.2.Villefranche sur MerJust a few minutes away from Nice, this beach issandier, quieter and less jam-packed with tourists than its more high-profileneighbor. There is only a handful of shops and cafes here, but sunbathing ismuch more pleasant. Beautiful mansions loom overhead, and there is a delightfulmarket here. You can always hop the train and be in Nice (for shopping and soon) in five minutes.3.La Grande MotteJust a short distance from the lovely and hipLanguedoc capital city Montpellier, this beach resort is filled with things todo: water sports, nature hikes (with over 10 miles of pedestrian paths), andseveral great spots for day trips. Take the kids to the water park, play golfor play tennis. Take trips into the Camargue to see flamingoes, white horses orblack bulls.4.Cap FerretThis wonderful peninsula near Bordeaux promisesbeach on two sides (with the ocean to the west and a bay to the right). This isa great destination if you are looking to get away from it all, relax at quietbeaches, indulge in surfing, fishing or swimming, and want to remain close to abusy city. Most of the hotels are two-star, but there are a couple upscalefour-star campgrounds as well.5.SeteThis cute fishing village is filled with museums, historic buildings and beachfront (from both the sea and the lagoon). Theport's brightly-painted rowhouses make for great photo opportunities. VisitMont Saint Clair for stunning panoramic views on the city and the sea. This isa great travel base for visits to Agde, Montpellier, Beziers and Nimes.6.Argeles sur MerMany people have heard of Perpignan, just a shortdistance from here, but Argeles sur Mer is far cozier and more relaxing. It hasa cute downtown with cafes and shops. It features a long stretch of beach alongFrance's famous Cote Vermeille (Red Coast) and it is a short drive to Spain.
