It is always nice to check out vacation spots with lots of history behind them. Learning the stories before you arrive can help you get a better appreciation for the area, and can also improve your knowledge of history. For example, if you are considering checking out Fort Davis, which is near El Paso, Texas, you should first find out this vacation spot's past so you can really enjoy your stay there. Before the area was officially settled on an old Indian village in the 1850s, it was called Chihuahua. A Belgian immigrant named Diedrick Dutchover, and a man from Illinois named E.P. Webster, rode to the area with a mail coach. Webster ended up staying in nearby Limpia Canyon, while Dutchover stayed at Fort Davis and eventually became in charge of it. When an Apache chief attacked the settlement, Dutchover hid on a roof with four Americans, a Mexican woman, and her two kids. When one of the Americans became sick, the rest of the party trekked the eighty miles to Presidio to get help, but before they could return, he had died of his illness. Dutchover eventually came back to become a hauling contractor. Fort Davis started to become a little more important when the United States Cavalry took over in 1867, and it became a base for both hunters and those just passing through. This is likely because it was situated next to two trails that were used often, giving it a perfect location. After a series of leaders, Sgt. Charles Mulhern arrived from Ireland during the 1870s and bought up land nearby. This allowed the area enough room to attract ranchers, who wished to both raise cattle and get away from the fever that plagued the rest of Texas in the 1880s. As it rose in popularity, legends and ghost stories alike were born, filling the town with tons of history that it is still proud of today.By 1885, Fort Davis had over 2,000 residents, two churches, and two saloons of its own. There was also more than one cotton gin, and a weekly newspaper. It had become the county seat of Presidio County in 1871, but there was a dispute that resulted in nearby Marfa becoming the new county seat by 1885. This did not matter for the people of Fort Davis, as the town instead became the county seat of the new Jeff Davis County by 1887. Despite this windfall, the town's population began dwindling when the army left the area in the 1890s, and though it spiked again in the early 1900s, it has never grown near 2,000 residents. The population currently sits at around 1,200.However, this is one of the most loved vacation spots in the area because of its mild weather and good location near the Davis Mountains State Park and the Fort Davis National Historic Site. Thus, anyone interested in history will be thrilled with this vacation spot, though you should not forget to check out the rest of Texas when you go.
