No trip to London is complete without at least a look at the stunning outside of Burlington House that is home to amongst other things, the Royal Academy of Arts.Built in the Palladian style around 1720 for the Earl of Burlington it is one of the very few buildings surviving from that era. Michelangelo's Madonna and Child greets you at the entrance to the galleries and is part of the permanent collection. It is one of only four of the sculptor's works housed outside Italy. The Academy is a stone's throw from Green Park or Piccadilly tube stations or a short and pleasant walk if you're staying at one of the hotels in Mayfair. It can be combined with other places of interest nearby such as Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square and Soho. The many shops of Oxford street, Bond street and Regent street are literally around the corner for when you've had as much culture as you can take and it's worth spending a whole day because you never know where you might be distracted next. The Royal Academy is famous for its summer exhibition which has been going for 240 years. It is a massive collection of paintings and sculptures by living Royal Academicians and a plethora of other contemporary and unknown artists. The rest of the year the Academy plays host to temporary exhibitions, details of which can be obtained from the concierge at any of the Mayfair hotels during your stay. It's worth investigating as soon as you arrive as popular artists sell out fast. Prices vary depending on the exhibition but start at £12 - it's a small price to pay for a little piece of history that will stay with you forever.
