Big Ben is probably the best-recognized landmark in Great Britain. More correctly, the Clock Tower located at the northeast end of the Houses of Parliament at Westminster that houses the bell known as Big Ben is the best-recognized landmark, but most people refer to the tower itself as Big Ben. Whatever you want to call it, it is truly one of the iconic landmarks of the city and is one of the most-visited tourist attractions in London. The Clock Tower was completed in 1859 and was built in place of the Old Westminster Palace, which stood on the site until it was destroyed in 1834. The tower itself was designed by architect Charles Barry and the clock was designed by Augustus Pugin. The bell itself, Big Ben, is the second one to be installed after the first one cracked upon installation. The second and current bell also cracked soon after its installation, but the crack was repaired and the bell was turned to avoid the clapper hitting the cracked portion. The bell weighs 14.5 tons and the size and weight are what inspired Benjamin Hall to give it the name Big Ben.The bell never has stopped ringing, not even during the blitz that London endured in WWII. The Clock Tower has been the model for many towers built since around the world and Big Ben is the site for Londons New Years celebration, which brings thousands into the streets to cheer the arrival of the new year when the clock strikes midnight.London is a wonderful holiday destination - full of history and the influence of many cultures. It is truly one of the great cities in the world, and though somewhat expensive, London hotels, for instance, can be found at reasonable rates, especially if you book a stay in one of the Mayfair hotels well in advance.
