Although not all car rental agencies have the same rules, there are some helpful things to remember when renting a vehicle.Car rentals are a large part of many people's lives. Not only do people rent cars for business travel and vacation, but many people are assigned rental cars by his or her insurance agencies in the case of an accident. When renting a car, there are a few helpful guidelines one can follow to ensure he or she has an excellent rental experience with no fallout from their insurance company or the rental agency itself.Bring the Proper Identification to the Rental AgencyNo matter what the reason for renting a vehicle, the car rental agency will require the renter to have the proper identification before he or she can drive off of the lot. Proper identification may not be the same at all rental agencies although there are a few general pieces one can take with him or her. A proper driver's license is required at all locations and cannot be expired. Along with a driver's license, one should have a credit card that lists the same name that is on the driver's license. Remember that a debit card is not the same as a credit card and may require more documentation. If the renter does not have a major credit card, he or she should bring two forms of a picture i.d. and two bills that have the same address as the picture identification cards. This will let the rental company know that the renter does have a permanent address and can be reached after the car has been returned.Check Both the Interior and Exterior of the CarOne thing to remember before driving the rental car off of the lot is to make sure that you have checked both the interior and exterior of the car. Most rental agreements have a diagram of the vehicle and a comments section. Any scratches, dents, or other aspects of the exterior that have been compromised should be listed and signed by the rental agent. The inside of the car should be meticulously inspected for any cigarette burns, rips in the upholstery or dashboard, stains, and even smells. Anything other than normal wear and tear should be listed in the comments section. Also, note the gas and mileage as many rental agencies have rules concerning miles driven.Supplemental Insurance: Do You Need ItWhen asked if the renter wants to purchase additional insurance, many do not know how to respond. Before visiting the rental agency, check with your personal insurance company to see if extra protection would be of benefit. Extra insurance purchased at the rental agency may be close to the cost of the rental car itself, which can literally double the price of your rental car.
