Every June 21st, the city of Paris, and now many other cities, are host to the free music festival, La Fete de la Musique, a one day event created to celebrate music in all its forms and to encourage the public to participate in a massive free event that includes not only stages and big outdoor venues but also street-level free performances all around the city.La Fete de la Musique was originally proposed by the American musician Joel Cohen and was later brought into existence by Maurice Fleuret, the French Music and Dance Director in 1982. The concept was for the event to be a summer solstice celebration with an all-night set of performances but has now evolved into an all-day event that encourages amateur musicians to perform in various locations around the city and also to provide free concerts to the public by musicians representing every genre. The concept is that the performers play for free and the public gets to see all performances at no cost. The event has now expanded to include many other cities in France and in the rest of the world, as well. The international event is now also known as World Music Day and is celebrated in dozens of countries. One of the main venues for the Paris event is the area around La Grande Arche, the massive monument located in the la Defense district just west of the center of the city. The area is primarily a business district with modern high rise buildings and is at the far west end of the axis of Paris, the series of avenues that begin at the Champs-Elysees in the center. There are performances and art installations in the area around La Grande Arche, and the business district transforms into a huge musical celebration.Accommodations may be found in the area, including luxury business hotels, such as the Hilton Hotel Paris la Defense. The Hilton Hotel la Defense is a full service hotel that provides comfort and all the amenities at price less than those of some of the luxury hotels in the center.
