Sravanabelagola is a holy place. It is a renowned Jain pilgrimage center in South India. It is located in the Hassan District of Karnataka state. This Jain pilgrimage is famous for its large single stone statue of Gomateswara, which is located on the top of the hill. From Mysore, Sravanbelagola is located at a distance of 93 km. The nearest railway station is Hassan which is at a distance of 49 km. in the heart of the town, there is a beautiful pond and the name Sravanabelagola is derived from this only. In Kannada, the meaning of belagola is white pond. There are two important hills in this town. The name of these two hills are Chandragiri (Chikkabetta) and Vindyagiri. It is the belief of the people that Bhadrabahu Swami and his disciple King Chandragupta Maurya meditated in these hills.The main attraction of this place is the statue of Bahubali. This is the statue of the Jain Saint Lord Gomateswara. It is the world's tallest single stone statue. This statue is 17 m (57) tall. It is an actual example of architectural and sculptural mastery under famous Gangas of Talakad. On the outer surface, many religious inscriptions are carved. It is located on the top of Bindhyagiri hill. To reach at the top of the hill, one has to climb 630 stairs with bare foot. It is tiring but really worth. Devotees pray and offer Poojas at the feet of the huge statue of the Lord Gomateshwar throughout the day.There is an amazing celebration, which is known as Mahamastakabhisheka. It is celebrated after every twelve years. Last time, Mahamastabhisheka was celebrated with full show in February 2006. Now it will be celebrated in 2018. From all over the world, thousands of devotees enjoy the celebrations. Since from 981, this festival has been celebrated. In this occasion, the bathing of Bahubali statue is done by the saints. For bathing of the statue saints use 1008 consecrated pots of water together with plenty of honey, ghee, milk, milk products, sandal and saffron pastes.Many tourist attractions are there in and around Sravanabelagola. Few attractions are Bhandari Basti, Chandragupta Basti and Chandragiri Hills.Shravanbelagola is 16 km from Chanrayapatna and Chanrayapatna is 36 km from Hasan, 140 km from Bangalore and 100 km from Mysore. From all these places, Chanrayapatna is connected by bus. From Chanrayapatna, the condition of the road is excellent and you can reach there by bus, auto or car to Shravanbelagola.
