FIGUERES is a small provincial town in the region of Catalonia with just 30,000 residents. It is seemingly undemanding that many may pass it by from their holiday itinerary if not for the famed museum, Museu Dali. This ancient museum was built by the renowned Salvador Dalí and exhibits great relic pieces that draw crowds to this sleepy hollow. Nevertheless, FIGUERES is popular for Barcelonans who want a short day trip holiday. However, with the long distance, an early morning start gives you the advantage of reaching this sleepy hollow in good time to view the place and surrounding area. A bus ride takes 90 minutes at least to arrive at FIGUERES. Main Tourist SpotThe town itself may not be as outstanding or appealing to the tourists as the museum in its midst. The museum is really the main tourist attraction, but there are some other pleasantries if you make time to discover what the slow paced town has to offer. At night, there is the feisty dancing and music known as rambla with great food at rock bottom prices, and pleasant accommodations. There is a huge open market on Thursdays at the towns main square that offers a variety of local foods and crafts. Spices are a specialty in this region which is abundant in this town. There is also an old Jewish quarter which is located on Magre Street that is considered the oldest part of town. History has it that the Jews were commanded to settle in FIGUERES by the Crown Prince, Prince Peter, during the mid 13th century.TransportationBuses and trains are the main modes of transportation in and out of FIGUERES. These operate many times a day with a time of one and a half hours from Barcelona. The town is easy to find from the train station by following the museum signage. The bus station is located a short distance away from the train station on the left with many information booths on the outside for the tourists convenience. There is a splatter of restaurants at the narrow streets surrounding the Dali museum which cater to tourists, especially the ones on c/Jonquera Street. The menu offers a wide selection of palatable local tastes, while more common tourists fare can be found in the Rambla cafes, such as sandwiches and snacks. If you are craving some real regional cuisine, try the Hotel Duran which is located at Rambla for some upper-class setting; of course, the price is on par with the food and setting. Nevertheless, it is a comfortable environment of excellent reputation.
