Donsol is a municipality in the province of Sorsogon in the Bicol region, Philippines. It is a popular tourist spot and is well known for the whale sharks that can be seen in the area. Majority of visitors to Donsol come from Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Philippines, and are mostly part of guided tours.Donsol AttractionsWhale SharksThe whale sharks of Donsol are undoubtedly the municipalitys main attraction. The existence of these creatures have been known to locals for over a hundred years, but were thought of as dangerous. The attitude changed when several scuba divers in the late 80s discovered the whale sharks and interacted with them, and only then did the locals realize that these creatures are indeed gentle giants, feeding mainly on plankton. These whale sharks swim to the surface and are hard to miss. You can also rent basic scuba gear to experience a close encounter with these gentle creatures. Do note, however, that interaction with the whale sharks is regulated by the Department of Tourism office, and that WWF guidelines are observed to protect the sharks.Manta RaysAnother attraction in Donsol are the manta rays the largest and most harmless rays in the world found in warm waters and are known to be the cousins of the popular sting ray. Manta rays do not have a stinging spine and never known to attack humans. They are believed to be one of the intelligent sea creatures often attributed to their high ratio of brain weight to their body weight.With a river span of 100 kilometers lined by a stretch of shrub, mangrove forest, and coconut trees, this vegetation is a perfect habitat for fireflies. In fact, you can see large number of fireflies in the trees and dancing around as the sun starts to set, truly a wonderful and magical sight you do not want to miss.Fireflies and Other AttractionsDonsol has another attraction that may not be as well known as their whale sharks, but equally fascinating: Fireflies. Donsol offers visitors a Firefly tour thats available year-round.Donsol is also becoming the best jump-off and base for divers to the Manta Bowl and San Miguel Island in Ticao due to the existence of better tourist facilities than the other rural towns. Donsol also has great trekking and biking site due mainly to the abundance of hilly areas and fields.Getting ThereThere are different ways to go to Donsol. From Manila, we have daily local flights from major airlines to Legaspi City, the provincial capital of the Bicol region and should take around 45. From Legaspi airport, a shuttle is available to take you to Donsol which is approximately 50 kilometers. It is also possible to take a bus from Manila to Legaspi but it would take about 10 hours although it is more economical.Best Times to GoThe best time to enjoy this wonderful adventure in Donsol would be from December to May. At this time, the currents are the strongest ideal for feeding ground for manta rays and whale sharks.
