The Wasi lodges are homely gateways into the rich and diverse jungle of Peru. It is necessary to start at 4.30am, to ensure you arrive for sunrise as the journey takes about a hour and the early sunset is spectacular.After the sunset you are able to observe a fantastic spectacle a rainforest clay lick. Here you can see hundreds of parrots, parakeets and macaws feeding off the clay lick which provides them with nutrients and salts.The clay lick image was a cover story of a National Geographic edition in the 1970´s. This drew in thousands of visitors and poachers to the area, so the bird population is not what it was. You will observe from a distance, and arriving before sunrise means you disturb the birds less.The Wasi Maldonado is near to the centre of Puerto Maldonado, a frontier jungle city in the Madre de Dios region. The lodge boasts a pool as well as other modern conveniences. The bungalow styled lodge is on stilts overlooking the river.
