But traveling does not mean that you would be safe. Escaping from our job and other stressful activities is just something that w
The remote Tambopata Research Center is a nature lovers paradise. Accessible only by boat, surrounded by jungle it provides a unique insight into the life of the jungle.Sustainably built only 15 years ago, the lodge uses local materials and traditional design to create a frontier atmosphere. The centre is a home for researchers and tourists wanting to experience the tropical jungle and its wildlife. The center is near to the famous macaw clay lick that was photographed by the National Geographic magazine many years ago. While this spectacular sight captured the imagination of the world, it also attracted attention to the area risking the delicate balance of the ecosystem. The massive gathering of birds still takes place, just at a lesser extent. This attention is one of the main reasons for the lodges construction. It protects and monitors the region from poachers, while sharing the knowledge of how to see the birds without affecting their natural eco-system.On most clear mornings of the year dozens of large macaws and hundreds of parrots congregate on this large river bank in a raucous and colorful spectacle as blue-and-gold macaws and several species of smaller parrots descend to ingest clay.Visiting the clay lick before dawn and making no sounds are some of the simple things that can be done to ensure that the life of these fantastic birds is preserved. The research center is has a number of trails that visitors can enjoy such as a short trails with magnificent views of the Tambopata River winding its way into the lowlands. You can also walk the floodplain Trail. This five kilometer trail covers the prototypical rain forest with immense trees crisscrossed by creeks and ponds. Amongst the figs, ceibas and shihuahuacos you could also see squirrels, brown capuchin and spider monkeys as well as peccaries. The Terra Firme Trail is a five kilometer walk that covers an entirely different type of habitat to the normal jungle; characterized by smaller, thinner trees atop hills and slopes. Saddleback tamarins are frequently found here as well as rare tapir tracks.Ten minutes upriver from the research centre is a pond platform. It is a great place to spot waterfowl such as Muscovy duck, sunbittern and hoatzin along with the woodpeckers, oropendolas, flycatchers and parakeets that call this pond their home.Another trail is 30 minutes away to the palm swamp. Dead aguaje palms serve as nests to red-bellied and blue-and-gold macaws. An elevated boardwalk and scaffolding tower allow for eye level observation of the macaws as they fly in and out of their nests. The birds are an intriguing site.Every evening after a day of activities and tours the local researchers deliver Macaw Project Lectures. The scientists provide an in depth look at the biology of macaws, their feeding habits, the theories for clay lick use, their breeding and feeding ecology, population fluctuations and the threats to their conservation. It is really interesting to hear firsthand knowledge and experience. However, if a lecture is not for you, you can take a night walk. At night, most of the mammals are active but rarely seen. Frogs are much easier to find with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories.Visiting the remote jungle region is a life changing experience. Be prepared to face up to the other world that is the tropical jungle and be inspired by life!
