There are several magnificent castles and chateaux in Dordogne which is a department within the region. There are an estimated thousand castles in Dordogne alone. Many date back to the medieval period , 12th century and the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) . They are among the most visited castes in France, often set in dramatic locations.
