When your Peru vacation makes its way through Arequipa, you will definitely want to take at least one hour to visit the Catholic University´s Archeology Museum. This museum houses more than one thousand pieces of pre-Columbian ceramics, textiles, stones, metal and wooden objects from the Inca, Chancay, Tiahuanuco and Huari. But by far the most impressive element of this museum is the nearly perfectly preserved Momia Juanita (Spanish for Mummy Juanita) that is also known as Lady of the Ampato, Frozen Lady, The Ice Princess or The Ice Maiden. This mummy was discovered by Johan Reinhard and Miguel Zarate in 1995 while he was trekking the summit crater of Mt. Ampato. Reinhard, an anthropologist, was working on a high-altitude archaeology project and was excavating several peaks in the Arequipa region with a specialized and diverse team. The snow of Mt. Ampato started to abnormally melt due to the heat of the volcanic ash of the nearby erupting Sabancaya volcano exposing areas of the mountain that had not been exposed in centuries. While the team ascended the Ampato summit, they stumbled upon an Inca burial site that had collapsed with the softening snow. Along with many artifacts, they found an extremely well preserved body of a young girl of whom they named Mummy Juanita. Within a few days the body and many of the artifacts were taken to Arequipa. Slightly damaged from sun exposure, Juanita was placed is a specialized refrigerator to ensure proper preservation. The discovery became a media frenzy for historians and archeologist around the world. In 1996, Juanita was taken to the headquarters of The National Geographic Society in Washington D.C. for display before the Ice Princess was returned for permanent display at the Catholic Universitys Museum of Andean Sanctuaries, also known as the Museum of Archeology, in Arequipa. The Ice Maiden is said to be the mummy of a girl of roughly 90 pounds between the ages of 12 and 14. She lived over 500 years ago, most likely a very good life before being killed with a blow to the head after a long walking journey to the summit of Mt. Ampato. It is thought that she was an offering to the mountain deity, Ampato, as a sacrifice for a highly special occasion. She along with other bodies of young children were most likely chosen at very young age and then pampered to ensure their purity and worthiness of sacrifice. They were then given special medicines to help them move on to the spirit world with the gods where they too would be worshiped by the local populations. After receiving permission, tests were run on her organs to reveal new information about the state of health and nutrition of the Inca during the reign of the Sapa Inca Pachacuti. The information given from the lungs, liver and muscle tissues were highly influential on what is today known about the Inca Empire. Time magazine stated that in terms of health, this has been on of the world´s top ten discoveries. The importance of this mummy and the incredible preservation is an incredible wonder and extremely worth visiting. Dont miss this unique experience to step into the past during your Peru vacation!
