If you looking for the perfect place in Costa Rica to fully appreciate the biodiversity that Mother Nature has blessed this Central American country with, it is highly recommended that you travel to Corcovado located on Costa Rica´s southern Pacific coast line. National Geographic has coined Corcovado National Park as ¨the most biologically intense place on earth¨! That is a large title to live up to for this more than 100,000 acre Beach and National Park of Corcovado on the Osa Peninsula. Established on the 24th of October in 1975 the park is home to the only tropical primary lowland rainforest left in the world! Tourists who visit enjoy traversing the many trails that cross the numerous eco-systems within the park and are asked to come prepared with fluids and appropriate clothing. There are four ranger stations across the park and professional guided tours for those who want guides. Most of the trails are easy to moderate in difficulty and the benefits are definitely worth the blisters! Corcovado National Park is fairly remote but easily access from Puerto Jimenez or Drake Bay. The park is surrounded by charming small towns such as Puerto Jimenez and Rincon where you can relax in one of the ecological all inclusive hotels. The peninsula also creates the Golfo Dulce that is great for snorkeling diving, fishing, kayaking and marine photography. The park also encompasses the River Coto´s estuary at Punta Blanco that has breathtaking flora and fauna. The penninsula boasts the largest primary forest on the American Pacific coast, extensive mangrove swamps, lagoons, beaches, Jolillo Palm groves, freshwater herbaceous swamps, montane forests and the infamous primary lowland rainforests. This ecologist´s Disneyworld, has eight distinct habitats in the park along with thirteen major ecosystems, there is certainly a little for everyone at this beautiful oasis of the Americas. With over 500 arboreal species, 400 species of birds, 140 mammal species and 110 reptiles and amphibians your guide will help you try to spot the jaguars and pumas, resplendent quetzals and scarlet macaws, catis and tapirs, anteaters and sloths, monkeys and peccaries, crocodiles and snakes as well as numerous endangered species. The entire peninsula is worth visiting and exploring as you will have a plethora of outdoor activities to participate in. Many of the trails are closed from June until November due to the wet season, so it is recommenced you do not travel to the area during that time. But outside of this period, you are sure to have a great experience while visiting the area. Most tour agencies and operators recommend staying in the area for at least three nights and four days to ensure a relaxing and fulfilling experience. It is fairly far off the beaten path but you will get a true feel for the biodiversity that Costa Rica has to offer as well as the wide range of eco-tourism activities that are available in the area. Nature enthusiasts are recommended to stay much longer if they can! Therefore, this is honestly one of the greatest ecological hot spots in Costa Rica if you want to fully grasp the biodiversity of this incredible country.
