Torres del Paine is among the biggest of Chiles national parks, occupying almost 600,000 acres (242,000 ha) of land in the south on the border with Argentina. It is also among the most important, receiving a significant proportion of domes Like any American, traveling occasionally is just what I love doing and I bet you share the same stuff with me. But traveling does not mean that you would be safe. Escaping from our job and other stressful activities is just something that w
Out of all the things that Nature and man have made, the Great Barrier Reef is the only collection of living 'things' that can be seen from space. While the Prairies and grasslands and forests are visible, they are not a true collective, like this amazing reef is. Working together, the corals coexist to sustain their existence and grow, making them a marvel of Nature. The way a reef comes to be is by having colonies of corals building upon previous colonies. A reef is hard because corals have stony skeletons that they leave behind, as hard as rock. Other corals attach to and grow over them, like layers and layers of stone slowly building up. Corals in the Great Barrier Reef can be tube shaped, have domes or look like the branches of trees and shrubs. This reef grows approximately one point three centimeters every year.An individual coral is called a polyp, and it uses tentacle like arms to capture plankton. Coral polyps are related to jelly fish and sea anemones, having clear bodies inside their stony shells or exoskeletons. And within this body there are algae. These algae enjoy the shallow waters of the Great Barrier Reef, and turn sunlight into sugars and energy using photosynthesis. The coral polyps in turn offer the algae a safe home in the sun and eat the sugars the algae produce. Many corals take their colour directly from the algae they support. Many different types of creatures live in the Great Barrier Reef besides corals. Rare and exotic fish that aren't seen anywhere else live, feed and breed on the reef. The waving fields of sea grass on the reef feed dugongs and sea turtles, of which there are many endangered species. Salt water crocodiles live in the mangroves and along the coastline where the reef mingles with the land of Australia in salt marshes. There are approximately thirty species of whales, dolphins and porpoises that call this reef home including the dwarf minke whale and the endangered humpback whale. As humans take greater interest in the world and how it is put together, the value of natural wonders like the Great Barrier Reef become more obvious. Not only is it a hot tourist destination ideal for scuba diving and snorkeling, the reef also contributes to the temperatures of oceans near and far. Many of the species of animals that live in the reef can't be found anywhere else. This beautiful eco-system is being kept safe by the many cities around it that rely on it for tourism and fishing. And there are still many great spots for people to experience the reef up close and personal, making it one of the most popular places to go on vacation.
