Torres del Paine is among the biggest of Chile’s national parks, occupying almost 600,000 acres (242,000 ha) of land in the south on the border with Argentina. It is also among the most important, receiving a significant proportion of domes Like any American, traveling occasionally is just what I love doing and I bet you share the same stuff with me. But traveling does not mean that you would be safe. Escaping from our job and other stressful activities is just something that w

CopenhagenWonderful, wonderful. . . Thanks to the Danny Kayc song, you know the rest. Copenhagen is a city that should be visited at least once in a lifetime, because the Danish capital has special charm. Denmark has the world's oldest monarchy, and the royal family lives in the middle of the city at the Amalienborg Palace. Don't be surprised to see Queen Margrethe out and about, as the royals are famously egalitarian.A sense of history is everywhere as you stroll through cobbled squares and narrow streets lined with old buHdings, before finding the vast City Hail Square, bounded on one side by the renowned Tivoli Gardens with Str0get (the straight), Europe's longest pedestrian shopping street, on the other. The square was constructed around 1900 in romantic style and revamped when Copenhagen was Cultural Capital of Europe in 1996. Walk down the broad Str0get and find Gammel Square, with an exquisite bronze fountain erected in 1608, then take a break at an open-air cafe in Grabr0dre Square in the heart of this trendy shopping area. There are excellent green parks in Copenhagen, and the Tivoli pleasure gardens offer all sorts of entertaining experiences (especially for those who like roller coasters). You must not miss the Little Mermaid, sculpted by Edward Eriksen in 1913, and doomed to sit on her rock in Copenhagen harbour for 300 years before entering the human world (just a couple of centuries to wait, then). She isn't lonely, though, with a million visitors a year. The New Harbour (Nyhavn, built in the 17th century) is a picturesque waterside area, with mouth-watering restaurants and lively bars. Danish fairy-tale author Hans Christian Andersen lived here for some years. It serves as a starting point for water tours that give a wonderfully different view of this special city.OdenseDanish author and poet Hans Christian Andersen was born in Odense in 1805, and the city is proud of its famous son, with a dedicated museum and his childhood home preserved for posterity. A new cultural centre called Fyrt0jet (tinder box) brings his fairy tales to life, and there is a festival held in his honour in Funen village, usually in July or August. The composer Carl Nielsen was also a local lad, and has his own museum. If Andersen could return today, he would recognize many buildings, including fine half-timbered houses and, of course, St Canute's Cathedral, erected in brick on earlier foundations in the 13th century. This is one of the finest gothic buildings in Denmark, named after the saintly King Canute (not the one of tide-commanding fame) slain here in 1086. Also notable is St Hans Church, whilst the 19th century town hall continues the tradition of monumental architecture.Odense is on Funen Island close to the fjord of the same name and linked to the sea by a deep canal. Ease of access was greatly improved in the late 1990s with the opening of Great Belt Bridge, the second-longest suspension bridge in the world, joining Funen to Zealand, Denmark's other main island. Formerly a tough shipbuilding city, Odense is making a real effort, to adapt to a world where traditional industries are no longer enough - take a walk to the harbour and see how well the major transformation from industrial port to waterside leisure area is going. The city has retained some industry but is now focusing on service industries (especially tourism). This has resulted in added emphasis on the city's cultural heritage, plus a real effort to create a much brighter, livelier city centre, with picturesque pedestrian shopping streets, a wealth of restaurants and bars and the constant buzz that comes from a large student population.
