Australias largest remnant of subtropical rainforest covers the deep valleys and steep cliffs of the McPherson Range, reaching elevations of 1100m on the Lamington Plateau. The 200 sq-km Lamington National Park is a Unesco World Heritage Site and has over 160 km of walking trails. Much of the vegetation is subtropical rainforest and there are beautiful gorges, caves, waterfalls and tones of wildlife. Commonly spotted animals include satin and regent bowerbirds and the curious Lamington blue spiny crayfish. You are almost guaranteed to see pademelons (small wallabies) on the forest verges in the late afternoon. The two most popular and accessible sections of the park are Binna Burra and Green Mountains, both reached via Canungra.Binna Burra can also be reached from Nerang.Both roads twist and snake their way up the mountain, cutting through encroaching forest and open grazing land. Its a spectacular drive, especially along the Green Mountain Road and well worth the effort.It is a true joy for bushwalkers to visit Lamington National Park. Most enjoy the rope and plank suspension bridges that run about 15 metres above the ground within the tree canopies. However, only the expert hikers take on the border trail that links the park's two sections. First time visitors are glad to use the walking trail guides provided at the Ranger Station and almost all guests take advantage of the transportation provided back and forth to each end. Binna Burra Mountain Lodge is an excellent mountain retreat with rustic log cabins and campsites surrounded by forest. The central restaurant has good views over the national parks and there is also a small cafe. While here, try the lodges senses trail for the blind, indulge in the Rejoove Day Spa or learn to abseil. Other activities include guided walks, flying fox flights and free nightly nature documentaries in the library. Transport to and from Coolangatta airport and Nerang Station can be arranged upon request.Established in 1926 the famous OReillys Rainforest Guesthouse at Green Mountains is still run by the OReilly family. A number of the luxury villas have recently been built but the original guesthouses still manages to retain its old world rustic charm and sensational views. The Discovery Center runs daily activities including guided rainforest walks, glow worm walks, 4WD tours, flying fox and giant swing rides and free nature documentaries. There is a plush restaurant or a more affordable cafe and for cocktails at sunset you can go to the Rainforest bar that opens at 4pm.There is a national park camp ground very close to OReilly's. Bush camping is permitted in many areas of the park as well, however you must obtain a permit and only a limited number of permits are issued. These permits can be arranged online or from the park ranger. Advance booking is recommended for weekends and holidays.
